Meet our Founder
Hi Everyone
Welcome, I’m Linda Higgins, founder of Ten Things I Love.
I started Ten Things I Love to help people appreciate the things they love, about themselves, about others, and about life. I discovered the importance of doing that in a unique way.
I had been going through a dark night of the soul. I was unemployed and financially strapped. My marriage was falling apart. We had family issues and I was tired of doing work that was unfulfilling. Tired of having a feeling of dissatisfaction, tired of not listening to the whispers of my soul. My life had become routine. I would get up, go to work, fight the traffic, come home and make dinner, sit in front of the TV until it was time to go to bed; then get up and do it all the next day. I knew there had to be more to life than that.
My life was so devoid of joy that I used to walk out of work every day, look up at the sky, and say, kill me now. I didn’t mean it literally, of course. That’s how strong my feelings of dissatisfaction were, not just about my job, but about my life. I kept thinking that I can’t live this way anymore. I felt like I was dying inside.
There was something else waiting for me, calling me. I felt it. I didn’t really know what it was but I made a commitment that day to find out. I decided to follow my heart, wherever it may lead me, no matter what.
Six months later, I stumbled upon a humanitarian/artistic tribute for Michael Jackson. It was called The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait (MJTP). Since I wasn’t working at the time, I volunteered to be a team member. They gave me a blog, a platform to write.
As a team, we decided to be a tribute of love. We wanted to be a positive place for fans to come and celebrate his life. Therefore, I kept my blog All About Love. In fact, that's what I named it.
I wrote about things that were meaningful and significant to me, highlighting things that I felt were worth appreciating about Michael. His music, his talent, his humanitarian efforts, and his impact on people, which I was seeing first-hand in the MJTP community. I also created videos that touched the hearts of those who watched.
Doing that had an unexpected effect. It unleashed a talent in me that I didn't even know existed. A gift for moving people with my words. Fans left comments on each article and video I posted about how much it had moved them; and how I expressed their feelings exactly.
I was finally doing something that mattered to me. Something that brought me immense joy and fulfillment. It felt good doing what I loved, focusing on what I loved, writing about what I loved, and spending time with people I had come to love.
Some of the people I met along the way became life-long friends. I would get gifts from them for no reason. Just to say they were thinking about me and to share something they loved with me.
The experience had a profound effect on me. It lifted me up out of the darkness. My spirit came alive. It brought back feelings of joy that had been missing for a long time. I felt like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz when she opened the door to a world filled with beautiful colors.
It made me realize that the reason I had been so painfully unhappy was that I had stopped doing things I love. I had stopped engaging my heart and mind and my soul in the things I love. I had stopped surrounding myself with the things I love and hanging out with people I love.
There is a reason we love the things we do. They light us up. They are meaningful to us. They provide value to our lives. They make our spirit come alive. They bring us joy and happiness. Therefore, it's important for us to acknowledge them, appreciate them, and engage with them.
When you stop engaging in the things you love, it causes you to lose yourself. For me, doing that dimmed my light, dampened my spirit, and left me in the darkness. But the MJTP changed all that.
When the project was finished, I knew that moving forward I had to find a way to continue immersing myself in the things I love. I contemplated the best way I could do that. One morning at 3 a.m. an idea came to me. That's when Ten Things I Love was born.
